Double Knit vs Worsted Weight Yarn - What's the Difference????

Tumblr_lrdcssvatz1qccjdzo1_500_large
Today I had someone ask me the difference between Double Knit (DK) and Worsted Weight yarn... She is making a Granny Square scarf and planned to use Red Heart Soft Yarn which is a Worsted Weight yarn according to the CYC's Standard Yarn Weight System. I advised her that this should be OK.

While I've pretty much always considered them to be interchangeable there is in fact a slight difference!

Double Knit (DK) Yarn is considered slightly lighter than Worsted Weight but heavier than Sport Weight...The following link below provide a chart of the different yarns.

Lion Brand's website is also a wonderful and incredible resource! To view some examples of DK vs Worsted Weight Yarn - click link below:

Soooo I decided to try my hand at double knitting... not sure exactly what I'm doing wrong but it doesn't look right to me... I suspect it might be that I'm twisting my yarn? The stockinette stitch should have nice and smooth very distinguishable rows of little V's and mind does not appear that way up close. Think I'll hibernate this one for a while and get to work on my holiday knitting!
